Best nine 2026: the Instagram recap, without the guesswork.

“Best nine” and “top nine” are the same thing: nine posts from your year, laid out three by three. The difference is how the nine are chosen — and that is where most tools quietly cheat.

Best nine, top nine, top 9: same grid

The ritual is simple: pick nine posts from the year, arrange them in a three-by-three square, post the result with the year in the corner. It started as a way to close the year on a profile; it is now as predictable as a birthday post.

Three names circulate — best nine, top nine, top 9 — and they describe the same object. What changes from one version to the next is the selection method:

  • Manual pick from your camera roll: the nine you like most, published or not.
  • Automatic ranking from your account: the nine posts that earned the most likes, saves or comments.
  • Personal edit with the numbers shown next to it: “these are my nine, here is what they scored.”

The first is a mood board. The second is a recap. The third is the most interesting, and it is the one a designed card makes easy.

Which metric makes the best nine?

Likes are the default because they are the oldest public number. But they reward reach, not quality:

  • Likes reward a post that was seen a lot. Good for “my year went wide”.
  • Saves reward something useful enough to keep. For a photo account, this is the more honest compliment.
  • Comments reward conversation. It tends to surface the posts you forgot, because the thread was better than the photo.

A good recap shows the metric you picked. A better one shows the three lists side by side, because they rarely agree — and the gap is the story of the year.

How to make your best nine 2026 with Prevz

  1. Connect an Instagram Creator or Business account (optional, read-only) so the app can import posts and counters.
  2. Choose the year and the metric. Likes, saves or comments; top 1, top 5 or top 9.
  3. Check the nine in the real Instagram ratio before exporting: 3:4 tiles, three-pixel gaps, the same geometry as the feed.
  4. Export a Story at 1080 × 1920 or a Post at 1080 × 1350, signed discreetly @prevz_app.
No counter typed by hand.

Every number comes from the posts themselves. A metric Instagram does not return stays unknown instead of becoming a zero.

When to post your best nine 2026

Between 27 December and the first week of January, when “this year” still means 2026. Posting on the 30th or the 31st catches the wave; posting on 3 January still works, but the feed has moved on. If you want the grid to carry into January, export the announcement as a Story and keep the feed post for the 31st.

Caption matters as much as the grid: 24 caption ideas for your top 9.

Best nine questions

Is best nine the same as top nine?

Yes. “Best nine” and “top nine” describe the same nine-post grid; the words vary by country and by year. The metric behind the nine can differ, which is why two best-nine grids can look completely different.

Can I make a best nine from my camera roll?

You can, with a collage app. It is a mood board, not a recap: it may include photos you never published, and it shows no numbers. Prevz builds the recap from published posts instead.

What size is the best nine image?

1080 × 1920 for a Story, 1080 × 1350 for a feed post. The nine tiles are 3:4 with three-pixel gaps, matching the Instagram grid.

Does it work for 2027?

The app follows the year you pick. When 2027 starts, the same flow builds the 2027 recap — there is nothing to reconfigure.
